A page view is recorded each time a page is loaded or reloaded in a browser. It's one of the most basic web analytics metrics.
Page views vs Unique page views
- Page views: Total number of times a page was viewed
- Unique page views: Number of sessions during which a page was viewed at least once
For example, if a user views the same page 3 times in one session:
- Page views = 3
- Unique page views = 1
Why page views matter
- Measure content popularity
- Identify high-traffic pages
- Track campaign landing pages
- Calculate per-page ad revenue
Limitations of page views
Page views alone don't tell you:
- How engaged users were
- If they found what they needed
- The quality of the visit
That's why page views are best used alongside other metrics like engagement time and bounce rate.
