Meet Theo, the AI assistant that watches your sites with you

Theo is the AI assistant inside VitalSentinel. It knows the page you are on, reads your own monitoring data and answers in plain words. It only reads, never changes anything, and it is included on every plan. Here is how it works, and where the name comes from.

Every monitoring tool has the same weak spot. It is very good at showing you a number and very bad at telling you what the number means for you.

"LCP is 3 s on Phone." Is that bad? How bad? Is it the whole site or one template? Did something change, or was it always like this? And what do I actually do on Monday morning?

For years the answer was a help box on top of every page, a paragraph of explanation most people scrolled past. With the redesign of VitalSentinel those boxes are gone. In their place is Theo.

Why “Theo”

In ancient Greek, a theoros (θεωρός) was a watcher: the person a city sent to observe something with their own eyes and bring back a faithful report. That is exactly the job. Theo watches your sites with you, notices what changed, and tells you about it plainly.

There was a practical reason too. Our customers speak a lot of languages, and Theo sounds the same in all of them. Short, friendly and easy to say, which matters for something you talk to every day.

The Theo chat panel on the Dashboard with suggested questions and the Ask Theo box.

What Theo does

Theo is the round purple button in the bottom-right corner of every page of the app. Open it and ask, in your own words:

  • "Why is /pricing slow on phones?"
  • "Why does RUM Monitoring show no data?"
  • "Which alerts are open on my site?"
  • "What should I fix first?"
  • "How many RUM page views did I use this month?"

Theo does not guess. It looks things up in your workspace, with your own permissions, and the chat tells you what it is reading while it works: Checking your setup, Looking at your data, Looking at the page, Checking your alerts. It can read the setup state of every module, the main numbers of every module for a site, everything VitalSentinel knows about one URL, your open alerts, your plan and usage, and the docs.

It also knows which page of the app you are on and which filters you set, so "what does this chart mean?" just works.

Simplest source first

Not every question needs AI, and most do not. Theo tries the fastest, most certain source first:

  1. Built-in answers. Suggested questions, What does this page show? and What needs attention here? are answered on the spot, without AI.
  2. The docs. As you type, matching docs pages appear under the box.
  3. AI on your own data. Only when those are not enough does an AI model read the docs and your data, and write an answer.
  4. A human. If Theo cannot solve it, you can send the conversation to our team as a support ticket, from the same panel.

Theo's AI answer to "Summarize what got worse on this site in the last 28 days and what I should fix first", built from the site's own data.

Every answer carries a label, From the docs, About this page, From your data or AI answer, so you always know what you are reading.

Theo speaks up first

Theo does not wait to be asked. When RUM Monitoring stops receiving data, when a critical issue appears, or when you open a page for the first time, a small tip bubble appears above the button with what happened and a button that takes you to the fix. You can turn the tips off in the chat settings whenever you like.

It looks. You decide.

Theo can only read. It has no tool that writes, deletes or sends anything in your account, and it cannot browse the internet. When something needs to change, it tells you what to do, gives you a short snippet if one helps (a robots.txt rule, a canonical tag, a redirect), and shows a button that opens the right page. You make the change.

That was a deliberate line. An assistant that can change your monitoring setup is an assistant you have to double-check. One that can only explain is one you can simply trust.

Private by default

The AI answers use models from Anthropic. Before a question reaches the AI, VitalSentinel replaces email addresses, phone numbers, IP addresses, keys and tokens, removes query strings, and checks the answer again before showing it. Theo never sees your visitors' identifiers, other members' email addresses or payment details.

Only you see your conversations. The team sees one only if you choose Still need help or send it as a ticket. Conversations with an AI answer are kept for 180 days; chats with only built-in answers are deleted within a day. And when you share your screen, Privacy mode hides Theo altogether.

Included on every plan

Theo is on every plan, Free included. Built-in answers, docs answers and support tickets have no limit. AI answers come from a monthly allowance per workspace: 100 on Free, 500 on Starter and 1,000 on Lite and higher. Only questions that actually reach the AI count.

If you would rather ask the assistant you already use, such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, the VitalSentinel MCP server gives it the same monitoring data. Theo is the one that lives inside the app, knows where you are, and can hand you to a human.
